Bracketing Is Not a Strategy

Ordering three sizes to keep one is not smart shopping. It is a measurement problem wearing a logistics costume. Here is what is actually happening.

You find a shirt. The fabric looks right. The collar detail is exactly what you wanted. You add it to the cart in small, medium, and large because you genuinely do not know which one will fit. You tell yourself this is efficient. It is not. It is a signal that something upstream is broken.

Bracketing, the practice of ordering multiple sizes of the same item to try at home and return the rest, has become normalized. Retailers tolerate it. Shoppers treat it as standard procedure. But the behavior is a symptom of a specific, solvable problem: buyers do not have reliable measurements, and garment size labels do not carry consistent meaning.

What the Label Actually Tells You

A size medium from one brand is not the same as a size medium from another. Chest, shoulder width, sleeve length, and hem circumference all vary, sometimes by several centimeters, across manufacturers. Even within a single brand, sizing can shift between seasons, production runs, and country of manufacture.

The label tells you which bin the garment was sorted into. It does not tell you whether the chest will clear your shoulders, whether the sleeve will hit your wrist, or whether the waist will sit where you expect it to. Those answers require actual measurements: yours and the garment's.

Most shoppers have neither. They have a rough sense of what size they usually buy, which is itself an average built from years of trial and error across inconsistent sizing systems. That is the foundation bracketing is built on. It is not a foundation.

The Real Cost of the Return Loop

Bracketing feels low-risk because returns are often free at the point of transaction. The cost is distributed and invisible to the buyer. But it accumulates.

  • Time. Packing, labeling, dropping off, waiting for a refund. Each return cycle takes real hours.
  • Fit regret. When none of the three sizes is quite right, the buyer often keeps the least-bad option. The garment sits in the wardrobe unworn or worn reluctantly.
  • Decision fatigue. Evaluating three versions of the same item at home, under variable lighting, without a second opinion, is harder than it sounds. Decisions made this way are often wrong.
  • Environmental load. Returned garments travel. Many are not restocked. The logistics chain for a single returned item can be longer than the original shipment.

None of this is the buyer's fault. The system created the incentive. But recognizing the cost changes how you think about the habit.

Why Sizing Advice Does Not Fix It

Most brand size guides ask you to measure your chest, waist, and hips, then map those numbers to a chart. This is better than nothing. It is not sufficient.

The problem is that a chest measurement alone does not tell you how a garment will sit across your shoulders, how the armhole will feel when you raise your arm, or whether the taper through the body will match your proportions. Fit is a relationship between multiple measurements, not a single data point matched to a grid.

Size guides also assume you have accurate measurements of yourself. Most people do not. Self-measurement with a tape is difficult to do consistently. The number changes depending on posture, tape tension, and where exactly you place the tape. A measurement taken once, years ago, is often the one people are still using.

What Actually Solves It

The fix is not better guessing. It is removing the guess.

A buyer who knows their precise measurements, shoulder width, chest, waist, hip, inseam, sleeve length, and torso length, can read a garment's spec sheet and make a real decision before ordering. Not a probabilistic one. A decision based on whether the numbers align.

This requires two things to be true simultaneously: the buyer has accurate, current measurements of their body, and the garment's measurements are published and accessible. The second condition is increasingly common. Many direct-to-consumer brands publish full spec sheets. The first condition is where most buyers fall short.

Body scanning addresses the first condition. A scan captures dozens of measurements in a single session and produces a consistent, repeatable record. That record does not drift the way a remembered size does. It can be compared directly against a garment's published dimensions.

The logic is: know your measurements, read the garment's measurements, buy once.

For Tailors and Brands

Independent tailors already work this way. A client's measurements are on file. Every commission starts from those numbers, not from a size label. The result is a garment that fits because it was built to fit, not because the client happened to match a standard.

Brands thinking about returns should look at this model. A customer who buys with accurate measurements returns less. The return rate for made-to-measure and measurement-guided purchases is structurally lower than for size-label purchases. The investment in helping customers understand their measurements pays back through reduced logistics cost and higher satisfaction.

Publishing full garment specs, chest, shoulder, sleeve, body length, hem width, is a low-cost intervention that rewards measurement-literate customers and reduces bracketing behavior. It also signals quality. A brand that publishes its specs is a brand confident in its construction.

A Shorter Loop

Bracketing will persist as long as buyers lack reliable measurements and garment labels remain the primary decision input. The solution is not to make returns easier. It is to make the first purchase accurate.

Know your measurements. Read the spec sheet. Buy the one that fits. Return nothing.

That is a shorter loop, a smaller wardrobe, and a higher proportion of garments that actually get worn.
