Branded size labels describe a target customer archetype, not a body. They shift by season, by market, and by cut. A 2019 slim-fit medium is not the same garment as a 2024 slim-fit medium from the same label. The number on the tag is a starting point for a fitting room, not a reliable purchasing specification.
This is why fit status in your inventory matters more than the size column. A garment that fits well is useful regardless of what the label says. A garment that does not fit is a cost, not an asset, regardless of what you paid for it.
Wear Frequency Tells the Truth
After two weeks of honest logging, wear frequency is the most revealing column. Most people find that roughly 20 to 30 percent of their wardrobe accounts for nearly all of their daily choices. The rest hangs.
The items worn most often share common traits: they fit predictably, they work with other pieces already in rotation, and they require no adjustment before leaving the house. The items that never get worn usually fail on at least one of those points. The shoulders are slightly off. The waist gaps. The length is wrong for the shoes you actually own.
These are not small complaints. A jacket with a shoulder seam 1.5 centimeters too wide reads as ill-fitting to anyone who knows what to look for. A trouser break that pools at the ankle changes the entire proportion of an outfit. Fit is not vanity. It is construction meeting body. When the two do not meet, the garment stays on the hanger.
The Gap: What It Costs You
The gap between what you own and what you wear has a direct cost. It is not abstract.
First, there is the purchase cost of unworn items. Add up everything in your inventory marked "rarely" or "never." That number is money already spent on garments delivering no value.
Second, there is the replacement cost of buying new items to fill gaps that already exist in the closet. If you buy a third white shirt because you cannot find the two you own, or because neither fits well enough to reach for, you have paid three times for one functional item.

A closet inventory becomes significantly more useful when paired with a personal measurement record. Not the measurements on a tag. Your actual body measurements: chest, waist, hips, inseam, shoulder width, sleeve length, neck. These numbers, taken accurately, become a filter for every future purchase.
When you know your shoulder width is 44 centimeters, you can check a brand's size guide before ordering. When you know your inseam is 81 centimeters, you know which brands will require hemming and which will not. This is not complicated. It is the same information a tailor uses on a first appointment.

- Alter before discarding. A trouser that fits in the waist but is too long is two centimeters of hemming away from being useful. A jacket with a chest that works but a waist that does not can often be taken in.
- Buy to fill real gaps, not perceived ones. The inventory shows what is actually missing. If you have four blazers and no versatile trousers, the next purchase is clear.
- Use measurements as a purchase filter. Before ordering online, check the brand's size chart against your actual numbers. If the numbers do not align, do not buy speculatively.
